14 days in any 28
New Mexico supplementary rules, Las Cruces District (including the Socorro Field Office): it is prohibited to "camp longer than 14 days in any 28 day period, after 14 days must move beyond 25 mile radius." BLM New Mexico's statewide recreation page states the same: 14 days within any 28 consecutive days, reached "either through a number of separate visits or through 14 days of continuous overnight occupation," then "you must relocate to another site at least 25 miles away."
Where you can camp
Allowed unless posted
"Most BLM lands allow dispersed camping unless an area is posted 'Closed to Camping' or has specific restrictions for land use or conservation" (BLM camping program page); "Dispersed camping is generally allowed on public lands in New Mexico" (BLM New Mexico recreation page). District supplementary rules close specific areas to overnight camping - The Box Special Management Area, the fenced enclosures at Fort Cummings, Lake Valley and Fort Craig National Historic Site, and Dripping Springs Natural Area after sunset (see seasonalClosures). source
Keep your distance
- 900 ft — New Mexico supplementary rules (Las Cruces District including Socorro FO): it is prohibited to "park any motor vehicle longer than 30 minutes or camp within 300 yards of any natural/manmade water source. Hunters may not park within 300 yards of these water sources." (300 yards = 900 ft.) The Las Cruces version covers natural as well as manmade water sources. source
- Recommended: 150 ft — BLM national camping guidance, stay-close corridor recommendation: "Camp within 150 feet of designated routes; avoid creating new tracks." Best practice, not an order - no district-wide off-route camping distance was found in the supplementary rules. source
Roads and vehicle access
Ask the district which roads allow camping
Within the district's developed recreation areas it is prohibited to "operate vehicles off existing or designated roads and trails unless facilities have been specifically provided for such use" (NM supplementary rules). No district-wide travel-management page tying vehicle access for dispersed camping to designated routes was verified.
Fires right now
We don't watch this office's fire orders yet — check its own site before you light anything. Here's what stage 1 and stage 2 mean when an order is up.
