Where you can camp
Allowed unless posted
The forest's camping page: "Some general rules of use and restrictions apply to visitor using developed recreation sites and general forest dispersed areas. These include regulations like forest-wide camping stay limits; use of campfires, firearms, and fireworks; paying fees, and controlling pets." No more specific forest-wide dispersed-permission sentence is published on the current site; wilderness areas (Eagle Cap, Hells Canyon) carry their own occupancy orders. source
Keep your distance
- 100 ft — Eagle Cap Wilderness only (Order 06-16-05-25-01, April 11, 2025 – April 10, 2027): "Camping within 100 feet of any lake or posted wetlands" is prohibited. The same order requires a wilderness permit to enter, caps parties at 12 people / 18 head of stock (6 people / 9 stock camping in the Lakes Basin), and bans campfires within 1/4 mile of listed lakes. source
Roads and vehicle access
Check the motor vehicle use map
The forest's maps page publishes Motor Vehicle Use Maps for the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area only: "Routes not depicted on the MVUM are not authorized for travel by wheeled motorized vehicles" (HCNRA MVUM page). No official page read today ties dispersed-camping vehicle access or an off-route parking distance to MVUM routes forest-wide.
Fires right now
We don't watch this forest's fire orders yet — check its own site before you light anything. Here's what stage 1 and stage 2 mean when an order is up.
