14 days in any 30
Order 06-18-00-25-03 (in effect March 19, 2025 - March 19, 2027) prohibits "camping, occupying, or otherwise leaving camping equipment and/or related supplies at any locations on the Willamette National Forest described in this order, overnight, for a period longer than 14 calendar days, in a 30-day period." The order adds: "Occupant must move off the Forest after 14 days; return to the Forest must not occur before 30 days have passed," and caps camping at "more than 50 calendar days total within a 365-day period." The rules-and-guidelines page states it as: "You can stay in your chosen site for up to 14 days in a 30-day period."
Where you can camp
Allowed unless posted
The forest's rules-and-guidelines page treats dispersed camping as generally available: "You can stay in your chosen site for up to 14 days in a 30-day period" and "Campfires are generally allowed when you are dispersed camping UNLESS there are fire restrictions in effect due to high fire danger conditions." Standing district orders close specific dispersed corridors (Detroit RD 500-foot lake/road buffers; the Moose and Gordon dispersed areas; Cougar Recreation Area restrictions). source
Keep your distance
- 100 ft — Rules-and-guidelines page instruction: "Where no campsites exist, camp at least 100 feet away from a water source, as plants and wildlife near water are especially fragile" - use existing sites first; page guidance, not a numbered order. The same page: "Do all washing and dispose of waste water at least 100 feet from any water source." source
- 500 ft — Detroit Ranger District Order 06-18-04-25-11 (August 18, 2025 - August 17, 2027): no dispersed camping within 500 feet of the high-water mark at Elk Lake. Scope: Elk Lake, Detroit RD only. source
- 500 ft — Keep-away buffer, not a stay-close corridor: the same Detroit RD order prohibits dispersed camping within 500 feet of both sides of Breitenbush Road (FSR 46) for 5 road miles from the forest boundary, Blowout Road (FSR 10) for 6.8 road miles from Highway 22, and FSR 10-130 for 1.2 road miles. Scope: those Detroit RD corridors only. source
Roads and vehicle access
Check the motor vehicle use map
The rules-and-guidelines page directs campers to the Motor Vehicle Use Map to confirm road access and says "Park vehicles on roads and barren ground to avoid disturbing vegetation," but does not state whether motorized access to dispersed sites is limited to MVUM camping corridors or an off-road distance allowance.
Fires right now
We don't watch this forest's fire orders yet — check its own site before you light anything. Here's what stage 1 and stage 2 mean when an order is up.
